Welcome

The Child-TRAC Foundation, commonly known as Child-TRAC, was first deployed in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that devastated southern Thailand. In the wake of the disaster, our team searched for and located more than 1,400 missing, orphaned, and at-risk children across six provinces. Through this work, we assessed their wellbeing, emotional state, and living situations to help ensure their safety and protection.

Our findings were published in the report Children of the Tsunami: Where Are They Now?, produced in collaboration with David Tolfree and Save the Children UK. The report was later presented to the Thai Government and the international aid community working across the region.

Since then, Child-TRAC has continued to support vulnerable children and their communities through our programmes in Training, Research, Assistance, and Childcare. We have developed innovative tools for interviewing children through play-based methods and delivered child protection and safety training to leading international organisations, including UNICEF, Save the Children UK and Sweden, Plan International, USAID, and the Red Cross.

Through our childhood education and community outreach programmes, we strive to create safe spaces where children can share their voices, explore their passions, and build brighter futures.

Child-TRAC initially began in 2006 as a UNICEF research project called CTRAC under the DTRAC foundation in Southern Thailand.

DTRAC was founded by three Directors from the USA, Germany and The Netherlands after being asked by the Thai Government to continue the necessary work of a Peace Corp initiative that had coordinated aid relief efforts after the 2004 Tsunami.

From their head offices in Ban Bang Niang, Phang Nga, DTRAC and Child-TRAC both worked in the six Thai Tsunami- affected provinces collating data bases and generating multi-lingual reports through on the ground research and high level networking events with the International Aid Community, local villagers and Government officials.

Child-TRAC facilitated many trainings on child safety, our findings and also created a screening tool to assess the status of children affected by the Tsunami without re-traumatising them with questions. This tool was called the Speak Out Kit (SOK).
